Track Season Recap

After this weekend of races I have had a chance to reflect on some of the things that have inspired me so much this season.  I love to coach for many reasons, but the best part is becoming a fan of my athletes both on and off of the track.  I love cheering for people I care so much about and who have put so much into something that tests every limit that they have.  Running is important not because of the outcome of the work so much as the work itself.  It makes one ready for the truly important struggles of life that so many people fail to overcome because they never placed themselves in a place of vulnerability, stress and pain.  When we willingly become participants of activities that can raise our spirits above the clouds, or disappoint us we become stronger.  Those of you who have completed this season whether in elation or despair just remember that you have won.

Some moments from this season that I will never forget are:  Connor and Nathan's blood rivalry, Zach's huge mile PR on our home track, Meghan's solo 3200 PR at nearly 11:00 pm @ Wes Lowe, Hail/Snow workouts (where we were the only ones on the track), Rorie and Kara both running breakthroughs against breakneck winds,  The Shawn's at the district meet 800, Austin Murphy's crazy 400 @ freshman districts, Molly Sarah and Savannah were the highlight of the first week scoring nearly all of our freshman points against a monster Rocky Mtn. freshman team.  Ryan Huff, his Cons and his pr @ the district meet in the vault. The greatest night of 3200's in my life with Chris' 10:02, Taylor's 10:15, and Ryan's 10:24...Unbelieveable!  Then there is Callie at the District meet taking off and running away from the competition, risking everything to have one incredible race and she did breaking the school record by about 1/2 second.  Lila and Chris blasting the last 100 meters at the state meet was epic, both of them finding their way onto the podium, Chris getting 8th in our district and 6th at state is outrageous, and Lila 2nd as a freshman...can't wait till cross.  And Sora running her race but faster, more focused, and more rested than ever before.  Truly saving her best race for her last race in a Meridian uniform.  I'm sure there are others I will recall in the next few weeks, but these moments have inspired me and everyone on the team.  Thank you for the cheering and thank you for working incredibly hard this season.  Hard work does pay off.

I decided to keep this up as well, since it motivates me so much.

"Here is the bottom line with why Lukas is successful: he works hard. Period. If someone out there is looking for a way to be a successful runner and they look to Lukas for an example, the answer is not in one given day or one given workout. He lives the sport. He workouts relentlessly. Some days he works out three times. It is a 365 day commitment. Even if he is resting, he is only resting in order to be able to recovery to do more work.

At Foot Locker the kids have an ice cream sundae bar after the race, but he wouldn’t eat it, even after the race. After state he treated himself with a high fiber pseudo pop tart. If someone out there is thinking the only reason Lukas is successful is because of his talent they are making excuses. Lukas is quite talented, but as talented as he is he is even more dedicated."

Every runner is at a different level, and needs specific training based upon their strengths and fitness level.

Generally we follow a one hard day, one moderate day, one easy day model.

Easy days should be very easy, and the other days should never be at 100%.

I believe in leaving something for race day. Practice is not the time to prove how great you are!!

Other things that are important in becoming a better runner is a long weekend run (about 20% of your total weekly volume) and as many crunches, pushups, and pull-ups as you can do.

It is the small things that no one likes to do that will make you better than your competition.

The goal is to do 100 pushups and 200 crunches a night.
